The Greatest Gift

The lights upon the evergreen,

The brightest that were ever seen,

Shine down on boxes, wrapped and bowed,

Calling to the happy crowd.

For children dream of toys and games,

Of gadgets with the latest names,

Of ribbons curled and paper torn,

Before the sun has barely born

But we know of a deeper truth,

Beyond the wishes of our youth.

For Christmas, at its holy start,

Was centered on a beating heart.

A Child born to bring the light,

A breath of life within the night.

The miracle was not the gold,

But life itself, a wonder told.

And so this season, let us see,

The greatest gift will always be,

Not wrapped in paper, not in store—

But love and life, forevermore.
