Hazel’s Heroic Heart

Most hearts play a standard beat,

A simple rhythm, soft and sweet.

Two sides marching, one by one,

Until the day is fully done.

But Hazel has a special song,

A rhythm that is joyful, strong.

When she was born, tiny & small,

One side didn't grow quite tall.

The Left side said, "I need to rest,

I think that I would like that best."

The Right side looked and said, "It's true,

So I will do the work for you!"

"I'll pump the blood to Hazel's toes,

I'll keep the pink inside her nose.

I'll be the engine and the drum,

I'll make the happy feelings hum!"

The doctors built a special way,

To help the Right side save the day.

They made a map that's brand new,

And gave her a silver zipper, too.

So if Hazel needs to stop and sit,

Or catch her breath a little bit,

It's not because she can't keep pace,

Or win the big and happy race.

It's just her heart, her Mighty Right,

Working hard with all its might.

Doing the job meant for two,

Because it loves the things she'll do.

So listen close to Hazel's chest,

To the drum that simply does its best.

A song of hope, a beat of glee,

The strongest heart you'll ever see.
